The recent loss of Baroness Margret Thatcher has made us at Teambuilding Solutions think about what makes a good leader and what other great leaders have been a part of our British history.
Leadership has been described as “a process of social influence in which one person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task.”
Baroness Thatcher did this, certainly not with everybody in the united Kingdoms support, but she made drastic changes that we still abide by to this day. She did this by leading a team of politicians in the direction of her views and didn’t much care for the affect it may have had on people across the UK. Because of her resilience and uncompromising nature she changed the face of the UK forever. Baroness Thatcher was a ‘Shaper’, someone who strives to invoke change. These kinds of leaders can be quite damaging if left in power for too long, this is probably why her own party took her down from power! The phrase ‘shaper’ is taken from the Belbin Team Roles Theory. Shapers are good for being brought in to lead a team in a drastic change to a company or indeed a country.
Other great historical leaders in the history of Britain are Henry VIII, his daughter Elizabeth I, Queen Victoria and, of course, Winston Churchill. Henry led his people in the reformation of the church, which was followed up by Elizabeth when she came into power. Elizabeth also repelled the great Spanish Armada, one of the greatest military victories in British history. Queen Victoria reigned for 63 years, her reign was a period of industrial, cultural, political, scientific, and military change within the United Kingdom, and was marked by a great expansion of the British Empire. Churchill is another figure not dissimilar to Thatcher as his style of leadership was what was required at a time of war.
These are obviously all quite high profile roles in the world of leadership. Leadership is required at all levels within an organisation and can go down to the basics of a head chef leading his team through a successful service or a manager leading a team of employees through many tasks and challenges on a normal working day.
It is a statement of fact that a business with quality management will always have a competitive edge. This is true in good times as well as bad. While it is recognised that true team leadership is not something you can learn from one text book, there are things that can be done to bring out your better leadership qualities while assessing the traits that are better left alone!
We help achieve this by a one or two day Management Leadership Workshop using a behavioural analysis tool (one that fits in with the company’s current usage – Myers Briggs, Belbin, SDI, etc) to identify the managers own preferred style. This will then be used in conjunction with a Leadership Style questionnaire to narrow down behaviour still further and unveil the true benefits of effective team work.
Once the journey of self-awareness has been completed, a number of different Leadership Models are discussed. The aim of this session is to provide managers with a number of options for them to think about when dealing with their co-workers. As we have already stated, there is no one true model for team leadership, but it is true to say that it can be viewed as situational – so knowledge of differing styles should equip managers with the confidence to face any situation.
This work is reinforced throughout the session with experiential team building activities that highlight the behaviors exhibited within teams and provide real leadership opportunities for the managers to practice their new skills.
