Sailing and Teamwork

I had the pleasure of being invited by TEAMORIGIN yesterday and the Cowes sailing regatta on the Isle of Wight. It was a spectacular sight watching these great America’s Cup super yachts fight it out for supremacy, and the new 1851 cup (not to mention the case of claret that went to the winning team!) It was also interesting to watch the high level of teamwork being displayed – from the entire team! Due to the size of the boats, much of the communication has to be done via headsets and the quality of communication must be very pricise if the optimum outcome is to be achieved. These are the Formula One equiverlant in boats, so tenths of seconds lost here or there can make a significant impact on the outcome of the race. You can read the race report here, but basically, the Americans won the race (as they did the origional in 1851!). Both teams had their problems, with spinnaker sheets tearing on both boats, but the British boat had to send a man into the water to cut away rigging that had tangled under the boat! My thanks again for a wonderful day, and I hope that we will be able to watch these great teams battle it out on a regular basis in our waters.
